Whale hello there
You're a curious one. We like that. Here are answers to frequently asked questions. If you can't find what you're looking for, please drop us a line.
Kelp
Kelp is naturally rich in marine polysaccharides and bioactive compounds that support plant growth, root development, and resilience. In Kelp Pots, kelp fibers expand when watered—allowing roots to grow through the pot walls while helping regulate moisture around the root zone.
And unlike plastic, kelp is one of the fastest-growing organisms on Earth, making it a highly renewable, regenerative material. 🌿
We source our sugar kelp from trusted, sustainable farms along the US West Coast.
All of our kelp is farmed, never wild-harvested. That means we’re not stripping ecosystems — we’re supporting farmers who are regenerating coastal waters.
Quite the opposite if you're using farmed kelp. Kelp farms create underwater forests that shelter fish, crustaceans, and countless little sea creatures.
Products
A Kelp Pot is a seed-starting pot made from seaweed and recycled plant fibers. You plant your seeds in it, then plant the whole thing straight into the ground when it’s ready — no waste, no plastic.
Yes. Unlike plastic, they don’t choke landfills or roots. Unlike peat, they don’t dry out too fast or deplete fragile ecosystems. Kelp Pots hold moisture just right, help seedlings uptake nutrients, and vanish into the soil when their job is done.
Within a growing season. Timing varies by growing conditions - in our own testing, we typically saw pots break down in about 8-12 weeks.
Yes! Bottom watering works beautifully with Kelp Pots and helps encourage roots to grow downward. Just place your pot in a shallow tray of water and let it absorb for 20–30 minutes. One important note: don't leave your pot sitting in standing water for extended periods. Kelp Pots are designed to manage moisture naturally, and prolonged soaking can cause them to soften faster than you'd like.
Absolutely. Kelp Pots are fully compatible with your favorite liquid or granular fertilizers and won't cause nutrient burn the way some synthetic pot materials can. In fact, the kelp bioactives in the pot work in harmony with fertilizers to support healthy root development.
Your Kelp Pot will actually tell you! When the pot is dry, it will appear lighter in color. As it absorbs water, it darkens. Think of it as a built-in moisture indicator: if your pot looks pale and light, it's time to water. If it's a rich, dark tone, your seedling is well-hydrated.
Kelp Pots are great for veggies (non-root), herbs, flowers, and small shrubs — basically anything you’d normally start from seed. The only plants not ideal for Kelp Pots are root-based veggies that need to grow down like carrots, beets, etc.
Nope. Our pots are made only from sugar kelp and recycled organic fibers. No plastic, no glue, no greenwashing. Just a pot that feeds your soil as it fades away.
Our pots are carefully made with kelp woven into the fiber walls. Could we make them cheaper? Sure — if we cut corners with glues, binders, or other synthetic fillers like many alternatives do. But we won’t. Everything in a Kelp Pot is designed to heal, not harm, the planet we’re all rooted in.
Partnerships & Community
Absolutely. We’re always looking for ways to support the growing seaweed industry. If you’ve got kelp, trimmings, or byproducts, let’s talk about turning them into regenerative products instead of waste.
Definitely. We offer wholesale and bulk options and love working with retailers who share our vision. Reach out through our contact form, and we’ll get you growing.
By creating demand. Every Kelp Pot sold supports regenerative ocean farming. We also partner directly with local businesses and processors to build a stronger, circular economy around seaweed.
Not just quite yet, but we're working on it.
